FALL 2021 Orientations

Making Center orientations cover health and safety protocols for spaces and safe use of equipment. They are focused on helping students understand and respect shop tools and machines before they use them, but are not meant to teach technique, process, or to take the place of curriculum-based making instruction. Many Making Center spaces require students to complete an orientation before gaining access.

As we welcome students back to campus this fall — many for the first time — we know that Making Center capacity will need to be carefully planned and tested.  Orientations to spaces and equipment will be conducted online and in-person in the Fall, though it may be necessary to prioritize – and potentially limit – some activities to provide access to as many students as possible.

There are two ways to get oriented to Making Center spaces and equipment: course-based orientations, and individual orientations:

  • Course-based orientations (starting August 16, 2021):  Some courses for which access to spaces or equipment is essential to complete course objectives have been scheduled for orientations in advance of classes.   If you are enrolled in a course that has been identified for a course-based orientation, the school will be in touch prior to the start of classes about the process and schedule.  Course-based orientations will begin the week of August 16th and will be offered for a few weeks.  Students will complete a general Making Center orientation online, followed by a hands-on component which will be scheduled in advance. Some classes will utilize mobile tool carts at the start of the semester, and will be oriented to Making Center shops later in the semester.
  • Individual student orientations (starting October 2021): Students may sign up for open slots in individual orientations to gain access to the appropriate tools and facilities needed to complete coursework or projects. These will be available on a limited, pre-scheduled basis this fall, and priority will be given to those students completing capstone or thesis projects. Students in thesis sections will be invited to complete an online Making Center orientation at the start of the semester to initiate the process. Depending on the demand and availability, we expect that appointments for the hands-on components of the orientation process will be available to individual students starting in October.

Orientation Process

All students are required to complete a general Making Center orientation online before getting oriented to a specific lab/shop/studio.

    • 1. How to complete the general Making Center orientation online

Sign onto the “Making Center Trainings and Authorizations” course page using your New School login and complete the “General Orientation” module.

    • 2. How to get oriented to specific labs/shops/studios or equipment

Some specific labs, shops, and studios will offer fully online orientations this fall. After August 1,  students can complete online orientations and get authorized to:

Other labs, shops, and studios will offer partially online orientations, but will also have a hands-on portion students will be required to complete before gaining access. Instruction for how to schedule the hands-on portion can be found at the end of individual online modules.
