Equipment Checkout Availability

Equipment and tool checkouts are available for off-campus use for up to 7 days. For many Making Center resources, students must have completed required orientations in previous semesters and already be authorized to use equipment (see Eligibility and Requirements)

For all students, the following equipment and tools are available for check out. Orientations/prior authorizations are not required except for the checkout of sewing machines.

* Updated February 2021: Completion of the Making Center online orientation qualifies students to check out domestic sewing machines. See the L2 Checkout page for more information.

For students who have already gone through the mandatory orientation and necessary training, the following equipment and tools are available for check out:

Equipment Checkout Protocol

Students making brief stops to pick up equipment may follow this protocol, without the need to provide COVID-19 test results. Keep in mind this ONLY allows building entry to pick up items, not to work any any spaces, and students must exit immediately following.

Step 1: Submit an online waiver (new students only). If you are a new student, you may need to submit your online waiver to gain access to the Patron Portal.

Step 2: Request the equipment or tool on the Patron Portal at reservation.newschool.edu. Reservation requests must be made 48 hours in advance of coming to campus.

Step 3: Make a technician consultation (if required).  The Equipment Resource Center (ERC) and Specialty Sewing Lab require you to consult with technicians prior to checking out equipment. After your consultation has been completed, a technician will approve your reservation.  Other tool checkouts do not require technician consultations.

Step 4: Pass the daily symptom screening questionnaire. On the day of your reservation, you must fill out the daily MHealth symptom-self screening questionnaire (follow the instructions on the Student COVID-19 FAQ). If you pass the screening, bring your daily pass, a face covering, and your New School ID with you to campus.

Step 5: Pick up your equipment from the contactless pickup location provided. Shops will be open with adjusted availability ranging from 12pm -6pm Weekdays.
