Recruitment and consulting firm Joe’s Black Book, who have offices in both NY and LA, is offering a design competition scholarship, awarding $10,000 each to one womenswear design student, and one menswear design student. Juniors across the United States were tasked with designing 7-8 original looks for a womens or menswear collection for Fall/Winter 2015. Submissions had to include mood boards (or concept pages), a color, fabric, and trim board, technical flats, and sketches from the development process. To support their design work, students also had to a written page outlining their concept, inspirations, their target market/customer, and how their submission represents their design aesthetic.
Last year Parsons students Lai Ka Yi and Cher Lin made the semi-finals in the womenswear competition, with Lai Ka Yi taking home the top prize!
The first step of the competition for Parsons students was to submit their project to the BFA faculty jury, comprised of Fiona Dieffenbacher, Michele Bryant, Felice DaCosta, and Raz Keren, who have chosen the students who will move on to the next stage. They are:
Menswear Semi-Finalists:
Alexander James Silzeski
Sijun Guo
Sunghee Yoon
Yiyun Guo
Womenswear Semi-Finalists:
Jennifer Kangmin Lee
Mingyan Yang
Ya Jun Lin
Honorable Mention:
Alejandra Burguete
The above student’s projects will be submitted to Joe’s Black Book to be judged by a panel of industry designers and employers. The top six finalists will present their projects to the judges on an all-expense paid trip to NYC. The finalists will be announced at the end of March. Complete details for this year’s competition can be viewed here.
Congratulations to our semi-finalists, and good luck in the second half of the competition!
