In 2011, the Fashion and Mentoring group established a worthwhile tradition; a sustainable way to give back to the community, while utilizing materials, resources, as well as the students and teacher’s talent.
Students and faculty met during the last week of school in the studio classrooms, where they gathered leftover fabrics and worked on making quilts and blankets together. Once all blankets were completed, they would be photographed and then donated to the local NYC chapter of Project Linus; in turn they would donate these blankets to children in a variety of local hospitals.
Project Linus is an organization that provides homemade blankets as well as comfort, to children who are ill, traumatized, or in need of a new handmade blanket, across the country.
We are thrilled to announce that this year the Fashion Council – led by Janet Yeung and Carmen Gama, and overseen by Assistant Professor of Fashion, Francesca Sammaritano – worked along students and teachers and again made many blankets for this worthwhile organization. The results were fantastic. Students used their left over fabrics to create very colorful and interestingly designed blankets.
