I was walking up Fifth Avenue this morning and I couldn’t resist taking this photograph. The construction workers were hoisting a very large window frame and attaching it to the facade of the University Center. It reminded me of one of the terms- fenestration- that was on a test last week in my Visual Merchandising class. Fenestration means window placement—and here I was seeing a window being placed! In the VM world the placement of a window is supremely important to what is displayed and how it’s displayed. For instance, the shadowbox windows at Tiffany & Co. are small and focused, making them ideal for jewelry display. This image of our new University Center reminded me of the many ways that what we learn in the classroom can be seen and experienced by just walking down the street.
