Meet our Student of the Month for December 2015, Sharon Nge!
The Parsons Fashion Council began the Student of the Month initiative last year in order to highlight outstanding students achievements and share them with our School of Fashion and universities’ wider community. We did a Q&A with Sharon to get to know her. Here are her answers and samples of her work:
What is your name, or any nicknames you go by?
I go by Sharon.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Toronto, Canada
What brought you to Parsons?
I am at Parsons to ultimately pursue a career in Fashion Design, but by leaving Canada I also wanted to have a different University experience and get out of my comfort zone.
Where do you find inspiration from?
I am mostly inspired by personal experiences, but I also love to look at nature and my surroundings. This is especially wonderful since New York City has so many unique spaces.
How would you describe your work and design style?
I design with simplicity and good tailoring when I envision the fit of a collection. My design style is romantic with a touch of elegance, so I always love drape with light and airy fabrics such as silk or chiffon, but I like to add a little sparkle in the form of embroidery or beading.
What do you aspire to do in the future, why do you design what you design?
As a child and even in high school I always had a fascination with weddings and I would always jokingly plan my friends weddings and their gowns. So, I hope to go into bridal wear one day. There is just something so rewarding to know that I was able to contribute to a bride’s happiness on their big day.
What is your Instagram handle, and/or website?
@SharonFaithN or http://portfolio.newschool.edu/nges938
What special courses are you taking?
Currently I am taking hand knitting. It is definitely challenging, but I love being able to create knitted garments for myself and friends.
How would you describe your experience so far as a Parsons student?
My experience at Parsons has been amazing so far. I have been challenged and even now I find myself applying the skills I learned in Foundation Year. Even though there are tough times, my teachers have been so supportive and each time I find myself learning more and more about myself.
What is one of the most important things you have learned/experienced at Parsons?
I’ve learned to keep pushing and pursuing what I love and to believe in myself. Since there are so many talented people at Parsons it can be easy to feel like I’m not getting anywhere at times. By persevering and sticking to my ideas, I always hit a breakthrough that is better than what I could have imagined.
What keeps you motivated when there is too much work load?
My family and friends are definitely the best motivators. When I’m particularly stressed talking to my friends always makes me feel better and more equipped – a good cup of coffee doesn’t hurt either 🙂
If you could offer one piece of advice to an incoming student, what would that be?
Even though it is important to work hard in school and get good grades, going to college is also about expanding your horizons and getting to know yourself better. So take risks, get out of your comfort zone, and do things that scare you because your time is now.
