Strand Book Store's Upcoming Talks with Artists

The Strand Book Store is having a few upcoming events featuring talks with artists and they’d like to invite Parsons’ students and faculty to attend:
A Graphic Art Trio: Chris Ware and Charles Burns Talk Shop With Chip Kidd
October 10, 7 p.m.

If you’re a fan of the graphic novel, this is your night. Chris Ware, author of Acme Novelty and Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth joins writer Charles Burns, creator of Black Hole, to discuss their latest work with esteemed author, editor and graphic designer Chip Kidd. Ware’s new novel, Building Stories and Burn’s new book, The Hive, will be talked about, but so will everything from the process of writing a graphic novel to the popularity of this genre– and if that wasn’t enough, slides will be shown to illustrate the talk.

Cartoonist Alison Bechdel Talks With Katie Roiphe
October 15, 7 p.m.

Graphic illustrator/memoirist Alison Bechdel has quickly moved from a cult hero into the public eye. Her smart, thoughtful, comic and often moving look at family and her funny, open look at lesbian life has made her someone to profile. Even before she became a graphic artist people knew, her famed “Bechdel Test” was all over the internet.

Marina Abramovic In Conversation with Klaus Biesenbach and Marco Anelli
October 16, 7 p.m.

Join us for a closer look into one of Marina Abramovic’s latest works, “The Artist is Present” which is now documented in a book of photographs by Marco Anelli, called Portraits in the Presence of Marina Abramovic. The performance occurred within the walls of MOMA in the midst of the retrospective of her work in 2010. Along with the curator of the show, Klaus Beisenbach, who is also the current director of MOMA PS1 and the Chief Curator at Large at MOMA and the photographer Marco Anelli, we’ll learn about how this 736 hour and 30 minute static, silent piece came into being and was actually pulled off.
