“WORKSTYLES” Lecture by J. Morgan Puett

This year’s Stephan Weiss Lecture Series continues on April 4th with a presentation by the artist J. Morgan Puett entitled “WORKSTYLES”. The lecture will take place today,  Thursday April 4th, in the Orientation (“Bark”) Room at the Sheila Johnson Design Center, 2 W 13th Street at 7:00pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Seating is first come first served.

Morgan’s projects traverse both the art world and the fashion system, defining a social practice that challenges the status quo of insular systems, creating working-living-researching environments to foster engagement with every aspect of life. Through her hand-crafted clothing line and social practice collective, Mildred’s Lane, Morgan explores among other things the history of costume design and production — as well as its social, environmental, and industrial implications.

Morgan’s transdisciplinary creative practice embraces the fine arts, fashion design, architecture, environmental activism and motherhood. Mildred’s Lane is a long-term collaborative project that promotes living as a creative research practice through a revolving cast of residents, fellows, visiting artists, scholars, and social practitioners. The Mildred’s Complex(ity) is situated on Main Street in Narrowsburg, NY and explores alternative forms of retail, commerce, intervention, and consumer participation. Morgan’s early work forged new territory by intervening into the fashion system with a series of conceptual store/installation/clothing projects in the 80’s and 90’s. Her work has been featured in New York magazine, W, Harpers Bazaar, Art Forum, Art in America, World of Interiors, I.D. and The New York Times, among other media outlets. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, and was named a Fellow of United States Artists in December 2011. Her work has been exhibited at renowned institutes internationally, most recently at the MoMA, New York, NY.
