Awl

The awl is essentially a sharpened metal rod. It is used to puncture or scratch materials. It can be used to make marks on wood, metal, or plastic, and can be used to create holes in tough materials such as leather when sewing.

Eyelet “Keyhole” Buttonholing Machine

The Juki MEB-3800 series Eyelet Buttonholing Machine makes purl-edge buttonholes on medium to heavy fabrics. Ideal for jeans, suits, and outerwear. The machine requires one spool of topstitch-weight thread (e.g. Gutermann Mara 30) and two spools of medium-weight thread (e.g. A&E tex 40). Thread should be polyester or nylon, no 100% cotton. Available by appointment only, UC room 518.

TIG (GTAW) Miller Syncrowave 180 SD

The TIG Welder is used to weld aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel, bronze and dissimilar metals together.

Heliodon

The Heliodon is used to adjust the angles of a direct beam of light in relation to an architectural model to inform daylight studies by lighting design, architecture and interior design students. With this capability, it is possible to model a global range of scenarios.

Felting Machine

Picot (Picoetta) Edge / Faggoting

Used for primarily decorative edge stitching. Used to attache two pieces of a fabric with a lace-like stitch.
Requires four spools of 21 weight thread.

Picot Edge / Hemstitch

requires two spools 21 weight cotton thread. Works best with crisp, lightweight, loosely-woven fabric (e.g. organza, voile) . Used most commonly for ornamental stitching on shirt waists, neckties, underwear, etc.

Ruffler

Plain stitch machine with gathering attachment. For sewing light to medium weight materials including cottons, knits, polyester, nylon, sheer fabrics and denim. Suitable for stitching such products as blouses, shirts, men's, ladies and children's apparel, uniforms, overalls, lingerie, etc.

Spaghetti Strap Machine

Plain stitch machine with spaghetti strap attachment. Works best with crisp, light to medium weight woven fabric cut to a 1 inch bias.

Zigzag Machine

Requires DPx5 needles. Works with standard bobbin and casing*.

*Widest stitch requires special bobbin casing that can be borrowed from speciality room.

Fur Machines

There is currently two fur machines available. One works best with light to medium weight skins, the other works best with medium weight skins.

Walking Foot

Very strong machine used for extra heavy weight materials such as leather. Walks the fabric slowly.

3 Step Machine

The 3-step is most commonly used in lingerie to provide an ultra-stretch stitch for hemming with elastic. The 3-step in the Specialty Fashion Studio has an optional attachment for making 1/4" hem with elastic inside.

Hong Kong Bias Binding Machine

Plain stitch machine w/ Hong Kong bias attachment.
Requires 1inch flat bias strip. For stretchier materials, use 1.5 inches.

Elastic Attachment Machine

Plain stitch machine w/ elastic attachment. Requires 1/4 inch elastic.
Works well with swimwear elastic.

Baby Hem

Plain stitch machine w/ baby hem attachment.
Used to create a small double-fold hem. Hem size options are: 1/16", 1/8", 3/16", 3/8", 1/2"
Works best with straight hems on woven fabric. Do not recommend using stretchy/knitted materials.

Buttonholing Machine

The Juki LBH-783 Buttonholing Machine creates plain buttonholes 1/4"-1 1/4" long. Works best on crisp materials; avoid soft knits. Uses one spool of universal-weight (tex 21-tex 40) thread, ideally a high-quality brand such as Gutermann. Available by appointment only, UC room 518.

Coverstitch Machine

The Juki MF series Coverstitch machine makes a secure, highly stretchable hem on knit materials. Options include two or three needle stitch, with optional top looper for a decorative sportswear finish. Basic three-thread set-up requires two spools of universal weight (tex 21) polyester thread and one spool of wooly nylon. The Fashion Specialty Studio (U518) has two coverstitch machines with optional hem or binding attachments, and are available by appointment only. Coverstitch machines available at any time in open studios U429/30 and U506.

The Pearl Machine trims the fabric and forms a fine rolled hem. The best quality hem requires one spool of universal weight (tex 21) polyester sewing thread, and three spools of woolly nylon. It is available in The Fashion Specialty Studio (UC518) by appointment, or any time in the open studio U429/30.

Sonobond SeamMaster Ultrasonic Sewing Machine

The Sonobond Seammaster Ultrasonic Sewing Machine welds synthetic materials together to create stitchless seams. It can also be used to cut and seal raw edges. Materials must be at least 60% synthetic. Available by appointment only, UC room 518.

Negative Carrier

Our wide range of negative carriers hold 35mm, medium format, and large format film within a photographic enlarger.

Photographic Enlarger

A photographic enlarger is the central tool in a darkroom and is used to enlarge a negative onto a sheet of light sensitive paper. It consists of a condenser head light source, a stage where a carrier containing a negative is inserted, an enlarging lens that is used with bellows to focus the projected image, as well as a geared column that allows the projection to be adjusted in size.

Grain Focuser

The grain focuser is used when printing in the darkroom to ensure that a projected image is sharp before a sheet of photographic paper is exposed.

Printing Filters

Printing filters, also called contrast filters, are used in the darkroom to alter the contrast of an image depending on the filter number that is used. The twelve MULTIGRADE filters are numbered 00–5 in 1/2 steps, with the lowest filter number corresponding to the softest contrast.

Enlarging Easel

An enlarging easel is used to hold light sensitive photographic paper when it is exposed in the darkroom. The sliding blades are adjustable so that the white borders around a printed image can be adjusted in size.

Enlarging Lens

Lenses are used when enlarging negatives in the darkroom. They allow the projected light from a photographic enlarger to be focused onto a sheet of light sensitive paper. The focal length of the lens varies depending on the size of the film being enlarged.

The Douthitt Exposure Unit and Vacuum Frame are used for exposing photo-sensitive emulsion on silkscreens, as well as photo-litho plates and solar plates.

Risograph Printer

Non-archival, soy-based inks with high saturated colors, designed for posters and zines. Limited to Tabloid (11" x 17") sized 130lb or less paper.

Rhinotech Washout Booth

The Rhinotech washout booths are back-lit for silkscreen emulsion removal.

Vandercook SP-20

The Vandercook SP-20 is used to print letterpress wood and lead type, relief blocks, and mounted polymer plates.

Picot Edge / Hemstitch

requires two spools 21 weight cotton thread. Works best with crisp, lightweight, loosely-woven fabric (e.g. organza, voile) . Used most commonly for ornamental stitching on shirt waists, neckties, underwear, etc.

Double Needle Machine

Ruffler

Plain stitch machine with gathering attachment. For sewing light to medium weight materials including cottons, knits, polyester, nylon, sheer fabrics and denim. Suitable for stitching such products as blouses, shirts, men's, ladies and children's apparel, uniforms, overalls, lingerie, etc.

Spaghetti Strap Machine

Plain stitch machine with spaghetti strap attachment. Works best with crisp, light to medium weight woven fabric cut to a 1 inch bias.

Zig Zag Machine

Requires DPx5 needles. Works with standard bobbin and casing*.

*Widest stitch requires special bobbin casing that can be borrowed from speciality room.

Fur Machines

There is currently two fur machines available. One works best with light to medium weight skins, the other works best with medium weight skins.

Walking Foot

Very strong machine used for extra heavy weight materials such as leather. Walks the fabric slowly.

Post Machine

Used most commonly for bag and accessory creation. Works best with sturdy fabrics. Recommended for leather.

3 Step Machine

The 3-step is most commonly used in lingerie to provide an ultra-stretch stitch for hemming with elastic. The 3-step in the Specialty Fashion Studio has an optional attachment for making 1/4" hem with elastic inside.

Hong Kong Bias Binding Machine

Plain stitch machine w/ Hong Kong bias attachment.
Requires 1inch flat bias strip. For stretchier materials, use 1.5 inches.

Baby Hem

Plain stitch machine w/ baby hem attachment.
Used to create a small double-fold hem. Hem size options are: 1/16", 1/8", 3/16", 3/8", 1/2"
Works best with straight hems on woven fabric. Do not recommend using stretchy/knitted materials.

Awl

The awl is essentially a sharpened metal rod. It is used to puncture or scratch materials. It can be used to make marks on wood, metal, or plastic, and can be used to create holes in tough materials such as leather when sewing.

Buttonholing Machine

The Juki LBH-783 Buttonholing Machine creates plain buttonholes 1/4"-1 1/4" long. Works best on crisp materials; avoid soft knits. Uses one spool of universal-weight (tex 21-tex 40) thread, ideally a high-quality brand such as Gutermann. Available by appointment only, UC room 518.

Coverstitch Machine

The Juki MF series Coverstitch machine makes a secure, highly stretchable hem on knit materials. Options include two or three needle stitch, with optional top looper for a decorative sportswear finish. Basic three-thread set-up requires two spools of universal weight (tex 21) polyester thread and one spool of wooly nylon. The Fashion Specialty Studio (U518) has two coverstitch machines with optional hem or binding attachments, and are available by appointment only. Coverstitch machines available at any time in open studios U429/30 and U506.

The Juki MEB-3800 series Eyelet Buttonholing Machine makes purl-edge buttonholes on medium to heavy fabrics. Ideal for jeans, suits, and outerwear. The machine requires one spool of topstitch-weight thread (e.g. Gutermann Mara 30) and two spools of medium-weight thread (e.g. A&E tex 40). Thread should be polyester or nylon, no 100% cotton. Available by appointment only, UC room 518.

Heat Press

15"x15" flat-bed, high pressure Heat Press: Use it to bond fabric with fusible interfacing, to heat press natural materials, or to emboss leather or synthetics with 3-dimensional forms. Available by appointment only, UC room 518.

Bonding of synthetic materials will be available soon, pending installation of vented hoods to capture fumes.

Pearl Machine

The Pearl Machine trims the fabric and forms a fine rolled hem. The best quality hem requires one spool of universal weight (tex 21) polyester sewing thread, and three spools of woolly nylon. It is available in The Fashion Specialty Studio (UC518) by appointment, or any time in the open studio U429/30.

Sonobond SeamMaster (Ultrasonic Welding Machine)

The Sonobond Seammaster Ultrasonic Sewing Machine welds synthetic materials together to create stitchless seams. It can also be used to cut and seal raw edges. Materials must be at least 60% synthetic. Available by appointment only, UC room 518.

Carlson Cutter

The Carlson cutter can cut, score or draw (with a marker) designs created in illustrator or AutoCAD. Only soft materials, such as fabrics, leathers and foams can be cut. Maximum cutting thickness is 8”.

Dubied Hand Knitting Machine

They are popular with knitwear designers because they are available in very fine gauges that reflect fabrics produced on modern industrial machinery. The Dubied hand-flats have a v-bed meaning they have two opposing bed that meet in an upside down V formation. They are double bed machines so can produce both single and rib fabrics.
