E4 Wood Shop

25 E 13th St, 4th floor   •   Hours: Mon - Fri: 9am - 10pm, Sat - Sun: 11am - 7pm. All shops will follow building holiday hours.
Open to: all New School students who have had necessary training with equipment and processes

LAST Open Sign-up E4 Wood Shop Orientation (REQUIRED) for Fall semester will be held 11/14/17 from 3:00pm – 4:30pm. Use the link in the upper right hand corner to sign up!

E4 Wood Shop will be holding another Open Sign up Wood Turning Orientation (OPTIONAL) 12/1/17 from 3:00pm -4:30pm. Use the link in the upper right hand corner to sign up and for more details!

E4 Wood Shop, E4 Metal Shop and E4 Tool Checkout will be open  9:00am -5:00pm Wednesday 11/22. All Making Center Shops will be CLOSED 11/23 – 11/26 for the break.  Regular shop hours will resume 11/27.


Students must complete the N2 General Shop Orientation before they are eligible to take the E4 Wood Shop Orientation. Only continuing students who already have done training can use the shop. 

The E4 Wood Shop is located on the 4th floor of the E building at 25 East 13th Street. The wood shop is equipped with sanders, drill presses, jointer, planer, table router, multi router, lathes, and various saws. Additional hand tools and accessories are available for loan through the E4 Tool Checkout. New School students are permitted to work within the wood shop during open hours once they have completed the Mandatory E4 Wood Shop Training. Students are responsible to understand all safety protocol and policy of the facility regarding etiquette, approved material use, required safety equipment / PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and proper equipment use. The wood shop is staffed with technicians and student technical assistants during all open hours to provide instructional support.

Dress Code:

* No open toe shoes or heels allowed.
* No loose clothing
* All long hair must be tied back.
* All hanging accessories must be removed.


This is a list of approved materials permitted for use within the E4 Wood Shop.

Any material not on the list must be approved before it may be used in the facilities. Before purchasing a material not listed get a MSDS. These sheets contain important information about handling, storage, safety needs, and disposal of the material. Materials must be approved by the E4 Facilities Manager.
