Weaving & Dye Lab

2 W 13th St, 9th floor   •   Weaving Room Open Task Times: Tuesday & Thursday 12:00pm - 6:30 pm, Wednesday 3:00pm-9:00pm, & Saturday 10am-3pm. Dye Lab Open Task Times: Tuesday & Thursday 12pm-5pm, Wednesday 6pm-9pm, & Saturday 10am-3pm. *Please note: classes are booked in this space all other times. All shops will follow building holiday hours.
Open to: all New School students who have had necessary training with equipment and processes

Please Note: General student orientations will resume January 2018. Faculty interested in scheduling a full class orientation must contact technician.

NOTE: The Weaving Studio/Dye Lab is open to students during Open Task Times OR with faculty during class time.

The Weaving Studio (L902) is equipped with:

  • 13, 4-harness floor looms
  • 1 wall-mounted warping boards, 1 warping reel
  • industrial felting loom
  • 2 umbrella swifts & 1 ball winder
  • miscellaneous yarns
  • pegs looms with combs and tapestry needles
  • work tables
  • double basin sink
  • ironing station
  • 1 industrial plain-stitch sewing machine
  • 1 superlock machine
  • 1 lasting post and cut mat for shoe construction students
  • a TC2 “jacquard” loom for research purposes only

The Dye Lab is equipped with:

  • induction and hot plate burners
  • stainless steel induction pots for dyeing only
  • drying racks
  • bins and buckets for marbling/dyeing fabric
  • cooking and measurement tools for dye processes
  • a digital scale for measure dye matter and WOG’s
  • two mobile heat presses with attached hoods
  • permanent organic indigo vat for sampling
  • shibori/resist and batiking tools
  • small crockpots for batiking wax
  • stainless steel work tables
  • Aprons/smocks and required safety accoutrement
