Academic Year 2020-21 Update

This facility will be by appointment only until further notice.

Orientations will not be offered in the Fall Semester. Students who were oriented in the past will retain access (see eligibility and requirements).

Mandatory Orientation

There are two Tiers of  Open Sign up Orientations for access to Wood Shop machinery and tools. The completion of each Tier gives students access to specific equipment in the N2 General Shop and E4 Wood Shop. Tier 1 Orientations are offered exclusively in the N2 General Shop and Tier 2 Orientations are offered exclusively in the E4 Wood Shop.

  • Tier 1 Orientation covers safe operation of the band saws, drill presses, sanders, and basic hand tools.
  • Tier 2 Orientation covers safe operation of the Table Saw, Miter Saw and Panel Saw.

Documented completion of Tier 1 Orientation is a prerequisite for entry into Tier 2 Orientation.

Technician Consultation

If you would like to request a space reservation, please follow the building selection and testing steps outlined the access protocol, and schedule a technician consultation using the link below.

During your consultation, the technician will speak with you about your project, direct you to the best resources to support your work, and assist you in requesting your space reservation in LibCal. The technician can also help you reserve additional tools needed for your days on campus via Tool Checkout.

You must come prepared to the consultation with initial drawings, dimensions, and material list.

Reservation / Use Protocol

All authorized students intending to use shop resources must make shop reservations on LibCal.

Once you complete your reservation request in LibCal, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to The Technician Consultation Appointment Calendar (if you haven’t completed your Consultation prior).

Note: Reservation requests MUST be made 48 hours in advance.

*In the event you need to cancel or change your booking (barring emergency), please do so at least 48 hours prior to your current booking. This way it allows another student to sign up for the slot.  Failure to do so can result in you losing your booking access for the week. Please reach out if you have any questions.

About the N2 General Shop

Students are permitted to work within the shop during open hours once they have completed the required safety training. Many freshmen will receive the safety training during class, but there are also open training sessions that you can sign up for if you do not receive the training as a part of your curriculum.

The General Wood/Metal Shop is equipped with sanders, drill presses, bandsaws, and various light metal work tooling.

Students are responsible for understanding all safety protocols and policies of the facility regarding etiquette, approved material use, required safety equipment / PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and proper equipment use.

The shop is staffed with technicians during all open hours and student technical assistants on evenings and weekends to provide instructional support.

Before purchasing any materials not on the N2 General Shop Approved Materials list, get an MSDS sheet for the material.

The needed MSDS sheets contain important information about handling, storage, safety needs and disposal of the material. Check the manufacturer or producer’s website for the MSDS sheet for your material or ask at the register before the purchase. The official MSDS website may also have the needed MSDS sheets for your material as well.

If you are interested in purchasing materials for use in N2 General Shop, E4 Wood Shop or E4 Metal Shop, please visit the Making Center Material Store.
